ABOUT Maureen Mason
Favorite WOD:
It is hard to pick a favorite. I like workouts with 3-4 different components, and a variety of movements in one workout.
Least Favorite WOD:
The movement I like the least would be thrusters.
Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
I grew up with four older brothers who played a variety of sports, and I loved watching them play. I played sports in high school but became more active after college. I completed over 20 triathlons, most of them sprint distance. I found a great running group in Kennett at the YMCA when I moved here in 2003. We would run 5 miles at least 3 times a week. My running days ended about 4 years ago but my friendship with this group continues to this day. In addition to workouts at CrossFit and the Kennett Y, I learned how to ski about 4 years ago and enjoy going out west for several weeks each year to continue to build on my skills.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel?
I was first introduced to CrossFit by Everett. When I think about my first few workouts, I remember feeling awkward with some of the gymnastics movements and exercises. I thought I had such a long way to go. It seemed like everyone else knew what they were doing. What’s great about this community is that everyone around me was reassuring and supportive which helped minimize my insecurity.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?
The biggest change for me has been an increase in my overall strength. This was my goal from the start. I wanted to increase my lean muscle mass to ensure I could stay active for the next 20 years or so. My goals now focus on longevity and vitality. I am now able to do more moves on the rig and am proud of the progress I have made. I can also break the threshold on my squats more consistently and at higher weights. A big reason for these changes is the challenge and encouragement I receive from all the coaches. They all have different styles, and it is helpful to have a variety of things to focus on and try to see what works best for you as an individual.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
CrossFit has allowed me to learn new things, even at my age! I learned how to ski just 4 years ago. I wasn't sure how my knee would hold up, but mentally, I was excited to try something new that would be a challenge. My experience at CrossFit gave me the confidence to give it a try and take it on. For the last few seasons, I have spent 2-3 months skiing in Colorado and have even been able to tackle some black diamond runs!
One of the reasons I have been able to ski is due to the personal training that I receive from Nick. He works with me 2-3 months prior to the season to focus on leg and core strength. It has been an important component of my routine in preparing to go out West each year. Personal training with Nick has boosted my confidence both on and off the ski slope. Since April I have even been able to run again in the CrossFit workouts!
CrossFit has given me the confidence to participate in some of their events such as Suns Out Guns Out and other partner workouts. I have surprised myself with how capable I am and how fun it can be.
Another benefit of being a part of this community is the number of friends I have made over the past several years. This community is so welcoming and supportive, and I have grown my circle of “people” as a result.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFKSQ moments:
Some of my favorite moments include being able to do my first chin over the bar, finally getting full range of motion with my push-ups, and the collective groan from the class whenever we have to do burpees!
Any advice for people just getting started?
You are more capable than you realize. Take each workout one element at a time and just do your best. You have so many folks cheering you on! Believe in and follow the principles: Be Present, Work Hard, Challenge Yourself, Have Fun and Be Humble.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
Spending time with my family, including my 2 adult daughters, Emily and Olivia. My favorite part of retirement is going to see my mom in Baltimore each week. I also enjoy traveling (now that I have the time!), being outside doing anything active, cocktails with friends and reading…everything!
